Poster Design Theme:
“Actions and Consequences”
The theme for our poster design is “Actions and Consequences”. It means that every action that we take has a consequence, be it good or bad. This is consistent with our topic ‘Pet Dumping’. When it comes to owners dumping their pets, most of them are in fact aware of the consequences of their actions, but are often ignorant of it. They do not stop to consider the fact that these animals are not so different from us humans in that they have a heart and they have feelings too. These poor pets will either die or be rescued by animal rescuers and left at the animal shelters.
Once someone reminds these owners about animal cruelty or when they themselves read about the numerous animal abuse cases or when they see a mangled body of an animal by the roadside, only then does the guilt arise. They start questioning themselves. But what’s the point of feeling guilty when you can’t undo what you’ve already done? Their abandoned pet is either already dead or being taken care of by another owner. This is particularly depicted in our video clip as well. Every action has its consequence. When you adopt a pet, you have the responsibility to take care of it, thus more time and money has to be spent. A responsible owner should know what they’re getting into before it’s too late and someone gets hurt.

Video Clip Description
Topic: Pet Dumping
Maria lives with her friend, Dee who was once her college roommate and is now her work colleague. The two friends are very career-orientated and thus do not have much time for anything else in their lives. One night, Maria finds a cat near a dustbin, outside a restaurant. Maria takes the cat home and gives it a lot of love and care, plays with it, and even lets it sleep on her bed. Dee would always give her weird looks whenever she starts playing or talking to her cat and she would advise Maria to “throw it away”. However, when work started to get really stressful, she started having nightmares of her cat being hit by a car, but on waking up would be relieved to see her cat sleeping beside her.
Then one day, “someone” (person’s face will not be revealed) took the cat and left it at the place where
Maria found the cat. The cat chased after the person when she started to walk away and a car hit the cat. The scene changes to show “someone” waking up from bed, and rushing off to the same street where the cat got hit and starts kneeling on the ground, crying hysterically. Then, Dee came along with a soft toy in her hand. The “person” crying was Maria. All along, she had been playing with that soft toy, thinking that it was her cat. In fact, she was the one who had dumped her cat on the street and watched it die. Since her cat’s death, she had been delusional due to her guilt. She kept revisiting the accident in her nightmares, and being delusional, she'd wake up and comfort herself by seeing her soft toy which she had started to think of as her pet since the cat's death.
It relates to our theme as we show the consequences of a person dumping their pet – it affects the person emotionally as well as kills the cat.

Do we need a logo? Why or why not?
A logo is the first thing a reader notices before reading any advertisement or poster. Logos are to inspire trust, recognition and admiration and they also help in the creation of a brand identity. Logos creates awareness for the cause. In essence, when someone sees a logo it should conjure up the appropriate feelings about the cause or the services. Therefore, logos are significantly important if the cause of the awareness is to associate audience. However, we do not need our own logo in the poster since we’re a student group not an organization, but we’ll be using the logo of the sponsor of the competition, as it will help to identify with the cause for which this poster will be made.
Who are the sponsors? Do we need to use their logo?
The main sponsor is the ‘youth creative’ organization. We have to make our movie poster with the Youth Creative logo in it, as it says mandatory in the terms and conditions of the competition.
The Text/Images to include in the Poster
Title (either of the three):
1. Guilt
2. Trapped
3. Consequences
Tagline:
“You can’t undo what you’ve done” Or “Don’t get trapped in your own actions”.
Description Lines (either of the three):
1. “These heavy burden,
This tightness,
That of what chains us down.”
2. “Trapped in these never ending dream,
Repeating day by day,
When will I be freed?”
3. “Sins can never be undone,
Ignorance is said to be bliss,
Consequences however will need to be shouldered.”

Progression 2
Two chosen designs
After a discussion of the group members with our lecturer Ms.Ivy we decided on two drafts out of the four designs shown above.
The 1st and 3rd design was chosen out of the four. As each of us drafted one of the design. We agreed that the members with their design chosen would make the poster with some opinion input of the other members.
As design one was mine draft I made a poster with that draft, and draft 3 was by Aditi so she did that.
We both posted the finish design to let the other group members and our lecturer comment and choose.

Challenges & Learning
When I drafted the design, I had intention on using the 3D feature available in Photoshop extended. However due to some technical issues the 3D feature was not useable and I had to find an alternative.
I decided to try making the same lightning effect I had in mind without the 3D feature using just basic brushes and filters available in Photoshop. It took me 3 hours for a trial and error test on filters to give me a rough idea of what I could try out to make the effect I wanted.
I finally found a break through after almost going into the fourth hour. I played around using the "lens flare" filter getting a shine from back to front effect. Than I incorporated multiple time of "radial blur" and "motion blur" removing any obvious visible lines. I than use the "wind" filter making the light source stretch out. The light source was that transform with "perspective" and duplicated vertically to have a 3D feel and look. Lastly a lot of erasing and black to transparent gradient was done to had the light focus from the center extending to the rest of the part of the poster.
A picture of our actress Prethiba kneeling in front of a box was pen tooled out and filled in with black to had a vectorized look. A non vectorized render of her was used as a large shadow to bring forth a more dramatic feel. With a black vectorized picture above the central lightning brought much focus onto the subject as intended.
After discussion we decided to use the title "GUILT" for the poster. Lightning effects were also done for the title to draw attention to them. Lightning on the words were completed much faster with just playing around with "blur" filters and multiple layers of duplication and "perspective" transformation.
Thanks to the technical issues faced I learned a lot of new techniques in Photoshop. I was in a real panic when the 3D feature was greyed out, however with much hard work and support from the other members I pulled through this challenge.
Miss Ivy advice me to have the sponsor logo in the middle instead of the corner, and I took that advice.
